The strategy for the component 2 is to work with our Russian partners to develop baseline information on previous outbreaks of pest species and establish a pheromone trapping grid in the first year. Data will be collected each year of the project and entered into a database that will enable predictions of areas where populations are on the rise. We will increase trap density in these areas and sample other life stages prior to recommending early treatment of these populations. Our plan is to begin this work early on with heavy Russian partner involvement and with training and experience continue to increase their involvement until it is sustainable by them.
The Component 2 Working Group will identify and develop strategies and methods and will be responsible for implementation of field activities. The Working Group will meet at least twice a year to discuss pest monitoring principles, electronic data base management, and decision support systems. The Working Group and field teams will identify major forest pests in the region and publish summary information on their distribution, abundance and control. Achieving anticipated results will require an early start-up in Year 1 followed by a review of results annually and making needed adjustments prior to the next field season. End of project expectations are to have a demonstrated innovative strategy for preventing large-scale insect pest outbreaks.
