Field groups have finished collecting data from the pheromone traps in the grid established for monitoring the Siberian and gypsy moth populations in the south of Krasnoyarsk krai and in Khakass Republic. During the meeting of the Component 2 Coordinator Yuri Baranchikov and the Head of the Russian Forest Protection Center Michail Kobelkov (Pushkino, Moscow oblast) both sides came to agreement about cooperation of the FOREST project and the Center on some problems of establishing of forest pests monitoring system in Siberia and in the publick awareness activity. At the Russian- American Symposium on invasive species held at the Institute of Biology of Interior Waters of RAS (Borok) the paper by Yu.N.Baranchikov “Russian-American cooperation on forest pests of Siberia: research projects and technology transfer for mutual benefit” was presented. Amone all, the goals, tasks and results of the first year work on the Component 2 as well as the last achievements in the pheromone communication of Siberian moth sudies were presented in his talk. July 15, 2001. The experiment on attractiveness comparison of dispensers with pheromones of Siberian moth of the Russian and American production was finished. The pheromones in Russia were produced by the Institute of chemical tools for plant protection (Moscow), those ones in the USA – by the Laboratory of chemical ecology of insects of USDA Agricultural Research Service (Beltswille). June 27, 2001. Members of Advisoty Council of the FOREST project approved the results of the first work year of the Component 2 and approved the work plan for the second year at their meeting in Irkutsk. The Component was presented by the HERON GROUP Leaders Katy Parker and Max MacFadden, by the Component Coordinator Yuri Baranchikov and the Working Group Leader Lyubov Matusevich. June 18, 2001. Within the special Subagreements between Winrock International and Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk Centers for Forest Protection the activity on the Siberian moth larvae spring sampling and on the pheromone traps setting in permanent sample areas in the south of Irkutsk oblast and in central part of Krasnoyarsk krai began. June 14, 2001. The working group has obtained the first portion of dispensers with a sex pheromone of Siberian moth of Russian production (Institute of chemical tools of plant protection, Moscow). June 1, 2001. The first set of the box pheromone traps of Russian production has been produced (OOO “Print”, Krasnoyarsk). May 15, 2001. The Director of the Forest Protection Center of Irkutsk oblast V.A.Mironov has signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Center and Winrock International for the work on the FOREST Project. April 20, 2001. The Director of the Forest Protection Center of Kranoyarsk kray V.V.Soldatov has signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Center and Winrock International for the work on the FOREST Project. April 19, 2001. The first meeting of the Component 2 working group was held in Krasnoyarsk. The representatives of all the organizations- partners and the Deputy Director of the FOREST Project A.I.Zabelin attended this meeting. L.S.Matusevich (Moscow) was elected as the Leader of the Working Group. Yu.N.Baranchikov was appointed as the Russian Coordinator of the Component 2. The suggestions for the work plan of the FOREST project in the second year were discussed and confirmed (the Meeting program is here .PDF). April 18, 2001. The Workshop on preparing the first field season of the Component 2 was held in Krasnoyarsk. The specialists of forest protection and representatives of the Forest Protection Centers of Krasnoyarsk krai, Irkutsk oblast, Khakass and Tyva Republics were among its 30 participants. They were told about the goals and tasks of the Component. The scientists of the Institute of Forest SB RAS and the Far Eastern Institute of Forestry have given lectures about peculiarities of methodology of the pheromone monitoring of Siberian and gypsy moths. The participants of the Workshop constructed and equipped the pheromone traps by their own hands, learned about principles and work of GPS- recipients. (the Worshop program is here .PDF). Sukachev Institute of Forest SB RAS, the academician E.A.Vaganov signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Institute and Winrock International for the work on the FOREST Project.
