The Institute of Forest is one of the priority scientific forest biological institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Institute of Forest is one of the priority scientific forest biological institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was founded in 1944 in Moscow by the academician an outstanding native biologist academician Vladimir Nikolayevich Sukachev who founded the theory and methodology of forest biocoenology as a base of a complex forest study, and of their productivity increase. The institute was named after him in 1967. In 1959 the Institute was joined in Siberian Branch of Academy of Sciences of the USSR and transferred to Krasnoyarsk. In various years the Institute was headed by academicians V.N.Sukachev (1944-1959), A.B.Zhukov (1959-1977), A.S.Isayev (1977-1988). Since 1994 the Institute has been headed by academician E.A.Vaganov.
